Why our lead time begins even before the order is placed

In an indus­try char­ac­terised by precision, repeata­bil­i­ty and increas­ing­ly auto­mat­ed process­es, this may seem unusu­al at first glance. For us, how­ev­er, it is a delib­er­ate part of our approach to quality. Although mod­ern machines han­dle the major­i­ty of the manufacturing process, there are still steps that require expe­ri­ence, atten­tion to detail and indi­vid­ual judge­ment. At the same time, the man­u­al inspec­tion of every sin­gle tube reveals some­thing else: behind every capillary and precision tube lie not only machines and manufacturing process­es, but also peo­ple.

Pre­dictabil­i­ty as the foun­da­tion of production

To ensure we can offer our cus­tomers reli­able deliv­ery dates, we group pro­duc­tion by mate­r­i­al into what we call ‘mate­r­i­al cam­paigns’. Tita­ni­um, stainless steel and nick­el alloys are each processed with­in a fixed pro­duc­tion peri­od before the next mate­r­i­al cam­paign begins. This approach ensures sta­ble pro­duc­tion con­di­tions. Process­es and test­ing pro­ce­dures remain tai­lored to the respec­tive mate­r­i­al prop­er­ties. At the same time, pro­duc­tion capac­i­ties can be allo­cat­ed at an ear­ly stage and pro­duc­tion slots reserved in the long term. This pro­vides plan­ning cer­tain­ty. Those who know their require­ments ear­ly on can take pro­duc­tion dates into account in a tar­get­ed man­ner and reduce stock lev­els with­out com­pro­mis­ing on secu­ri­ty of supply.

Appli­ca­tions that demand trust

In instru­men­ta­tion, absolute reli­a­bil­i­ty is essential. Tubes must oper­ate with last­ing sta­bil­i­ty, even under crit­i­cal con­di­tions. Dimen­sions and Tolerances That Fit

The foun­da­tion for this is a manufacturing process designed for precision. Capillary and precision tubes are produced with out­er diameters rang­ing from 0.7 to 19.05 mil­lime­ters and wall thick­ness­es from 0.1 to 2.50 mil­lime­ters. Tight tolerances ensure a pre­cise fit. The stan­dard tolerances are ±0.05 mil­lime­ters for the out­er diam­e­ter and ±10 per­cent for the wall thick­ness. These are sup­ple­ment­ed by spec­i­fi­ca­tions in accor­dance with DIN EN ISO 1127 D4/​T4. If the appli­ca­tion requires it, tighter tolerances can also be achieved.

Lengths and Fur­ther Processing

Anoth­er advan­tage lies in the lengths. ETHEN man­u­fac­tures tubes up to 6,400 mil­lime­ters and cuts them pre­cise­ly to the desired length. The result is accu­rate to the mil­lime­ter and repro­ducible. Even the small­est spec­i­fi­ca­tions can be reliably fulfilled.
In addi­tion, our own tubes are used to pro­duce pre­cise sleeves start­ing at 2 mil­lime­ters in length, with exact diameters and a low-burr sur­face. Man­u­fac­tured in var­i­ous materials, they are opti­mal­ly designed for safe fur­ther pro­cess­ing.

These can also be booked indi­vid­u­al­ly as required, for exam­ple of this is the reg­u­lar refresh­er train­ing course on X‑ray flu­o­res­cence analy­sis (XRF), which our radi­a­tion pro­tec­tion offi­cer Tobias Kirch renewed in Jan­u­ary 2026 togeth­er with Andreas Gilman, test super­vi­sor at ETHEN ROHRE. This train­ing, which is manda­to­ry every five years, ensures that the use of XRF tech­nol­o­gy, par­tic­u­lar­ly with regard to radi­a­tion pro­tec­tion and mix-up checks, is always up to date. In this way, we ensure that mod­ern test­ing meth­ods are used in a tech­ni­cal­ly sound and respon­si­ble man­ner at our plant in Aachen.

These train­ing cours­es are part of a com­pre­hen­sive under­stand­ing of quality that goes beyond mere com­pli­ance with standards at ETHEN ROHRE. We man­u­fac­ture our capillary and precision tubes to tight tolerances and rec­og­nized quality standards. This is based on a pro­duc­tion process devel­oped in-house, which has been con­tin­u­ous­ly refined for more than five decades and is based on our own tube draw­ing machines. The selec­tion of additional ser­vices is always sub­ject to a tech­ni­cal review, dur­ing which we pro­vide our cus­tomers with advice and support.

Option­al test­ing and cer­ti­fi­ca­tion services

- Inter­gran­u­lar cor­ro­sion test (IK test accord­ing to DIN EN ISO 3651–2, method A or C): Destruc­tive test­ing to eval­u­ate the resis­tance of materials to defined cor­ro­sive media.

- Eddy cur­rent test­ing (DIN EN ISO 10893–1 /​ DIN EN ISO 10893–2): Auto­mat­ed test­ing of seam­less and weld­ed steel pipes (except sub­merged arc weld­ed pipes) to detect imperfections.

- Hot ten­sile test: Destruc­tive mate­r­i­al test to deter­mine mechan­i­cal char­ac­ter­is­tics such as yield strength, ten­sile strength, elon­ga­tion at break, and reduc­tion of area at ele­vat­ed temperatures.

- Ultra­son­ic test­ing (DIN EN ISO 10893–10): Auto­mat­ed ultra­son­ic test­ing of seam­less and weld­ed steel pipes (except sub­merged arc weld­ed pipes) to detect lon­gi­tu­di­nal and/​or trans­verse defects.

- Hard­ness test­ing (based on NACE MR0175 /​ NACE MR0103): Test­ing to eval­u­ate mate­r­i­al hard­ness for appli­ca­tions in cor­ro­sive envi­ron­ments, such as oil and gas pro­duc­tion or refineries.

- Grain size deter­mi­na­tion: Mate­r­i­al test­ing to ana­lyze the size and dis­tri­b­u­tion of crys­tal grains in the metal­lic structure.

- Fac­to­ry cer­tifi­cate 2.2 accord­ing to EN 10204:2004: Manufacturer’s cer­tifi­cate con­firm­ing that the deliv­ered prod­ucts com­ply with the agreed requirements.

- Fac­to­ry cer­tifi­cate 3.1 accord­ing to EN 10204:2004: Test cer­tifi­cate with spe­cif­ic test results to con­firm the order requirements.

- Accep­tance test cer­tifi­cate 3.2 (TÜV) accord­ing to EN 10204:2004: Test cer­tifi­cate with additional accep­tance by an inde­pen­dent test­ing lab­o­ra­to­ry to ensure the agreed mate­r­i­al specifications.

This mod­u­lar test­ing service enables our cus­tomers to obtain exact­ly the cer­tifi­cates and quality char­ac­ter­is­tics required for their respec­tive appli­ca­tions. In this way, we com­bine flex­i­bil­i­ty in pro­cure­ment with the secu­ri­ty of test­ed quality and under­stand quality assur­ance at ETHEN ROHRE as what it is for us: a con­tin­u­ous process.
